Graduate Testimonial: A faith walk from the beginning

Stephanie SmithI believe that it was 2006 when I had my first conversation with Mrs. LaFarn Burton (Mz. LB to most).  Our conversation entailed discussions about the programs that her Academy offered.  After our ‘meet and greet’ I felt very comfortable with her and the school.  I registered, enrolled and began night classes.  At that time the school was located on Clay Street, I was the only night student and Mz. LB was my instructor.

Oh my, how the situation has changed – the location of the school is now on Marshall Street and Mz LB does very little instructing.  I started, as they would call, the ‘Step Program’ which means that you pay for each program until you reach your desired goal.  So, I started with the Nail Program.  My first practical/model was a pedicure on Mz LB’s husband – Mr. Norman Burton.  My first encounter with him – how nervous was I?!  I could say everything went well.  During that time of classes, I was in Corporate America, had a part-time job and earned my license in Nails and Cosmetology in 2007.

In 2009, Mz. LB began to offer an Instructor’s Program; so I reached out to her, enrolled and began classes.  I had to instruct some classes for a grade to become licensed.  Soon after I became an employed instructor at LB Beauty and Training Academy.  If anyone knows Mz. LB, you know that the many projects she gives you is  guiding  you to the next ‘gig’ (that’s what we will call it).

Of course, the next ‘gig’ was receiving my Barber’s License and Instruction Endorsement.  By this time, I had received my Nail Technician License, Cosmetology License, Barber’s License, all with the endorsement of instructor, head instructor at LB Beauty Academy and had my own salon.  What more could I do? Hmmmm…

Having your own business is not always as easy as people may say.  By 2011, I was beginning to become frustrated and overwhelmed with my business and battling some personal issues.  With all that said, I was ready to give it all up and continue in Corporate America.  So, Mz. LB suggested that I take her Entrepreneur Course from LB Beauty Education Foundation, which was the beginning of the first tuition free offered course.  With this course we had many speakers sharing their professional experiences and expertise in their prospective fields.  Attending classes I heard many trials and tribulations on business ownership and received encouraging words to continue my journey.

So the journey continued…

Again, I ask what more could I do?

Remember, I stated Mz. LB guides you to your next ‘gig’.  In 2016 I was introduced to the world of Esthetics and Permanent Cosmetic Tattoos.  I am now licensed with instructor endorsement in Esthetics, which I have fallen in love with. During this process, I learned about Mz. LB retiring and was asked if I would be interested in becoming a shareholder of LB Beauty and Training Academy. What kind of question is that? Yes, I most definitely would.

The next ‘gig’ will be becoming a shareholder of LB Beauty and Training Academy.  And the story is still being written…

Have FAITH in your ‘Journey’ – Have an open mind and heart during your ‘journey’ and remember that it is a ‘journey’ not knowing where the road may lead.

My story is just beginning…

To be continued…
